I am a nature lover. And I want to live on a farm one day!

I love plants, flowers, animals and being surrounded by them. I have been growing herbs, flowers and tomatoes hydroponically since my eleventh birthday. My little indoor garden consists of many varieties of plants that include succulents, air plants, vines and various indoor plants. I have tried some amount of propagation and grafting. Propagation has been a successful process but an ambitious idea of grafting two pepper plants had a droopy ending.

When I discovered microgreens, I loved the idea of having an indoor farm. Well, when you grow your own food, it’s a farm. It gives me immense joy to grow anything, especially from the dormant seeds. Soaking the seeds to wake them up, covering the container with a blanket for germination, providing conducive conditions for their growth, using technology like UV lights and continuous experimentation for a successful harvest is an exciting process for me. I love sharing this nurturing journey with my friends and family. My grandfather who I don’t get to see often likes to grow the exact same plants as me. We connect on facetime and have built a special bond because of the shared hobby. I want to share this joy with others as this is an incredibly easy and a rewarding experience.

I am a “caprese” fan. All I need are mozzarella, tomato and basil. It can be a sandwich, a panini or pasta salad. To add another ingredient to my plate was a challenge, and I was sure that I was not meeting my nutritive needs. I started on an adventure to discover new food ingredients and try new recipes. On one of these missions, microgreens won my heart at a cozy coffee shop. A caprese sandwich arrived garnished with the microgreeens. The flavor was delightful and it was definitely not a struggle to “eat the greens”. I was curious about this new ingredient and loved what I discovered. Tiny quantities are packed with mega nutrients, bursting with flavor. Soon this became my go-to topping for most of the lunches and dinners.

I am a curious internet surfer of plant physiology, ecology, nutrition and environmental sciences. A dossier of the internet searches equipped me with the knowledge to start growing the microgreens. My sister Manya, (with more than one green thumb) helped me to pursue this passion as a kitchen farmer. Since I enjoy growing them, and the experience of growing one’s own food is gratifying, here I am sharing my journey.

Our Story

No Green Thumb

2020 will go down in history as the year the world paused. To get through the tough times, people sought different ways to find comfort.

I passionately pursued my hobby of growing indoor plants to take a break from online school. Not being able to see my friends and with all activities canceled, indoor gardening received my undivided attention. It got the love it deserves in the form of timely watering, pruning and even changing locations of the plants to catch the best sunlight.

While we were all sheltering in place for months together, I began to explore options to stay in touch with family. My grandparents (nana and nani ) who were by themselves and couldn’t visit family, discovered the technique of facetime. We stayed connected with each other via regular video calls. On one such call, having run out of any new conversation, I began to tour around the house, zooming on my green buddies. That caught nana's attention and he started asking questions about all the plants I was growing. He was most intrigued by the microgreens that my sister and I were growing as they showed change every day. Nana was so inspired by the entire concept of growing one’s own food, that he wanted to know more about this process. I shared our process with him and guided him through it.

This became our shared interest and a point of connection. Both of us were impatient to check on each other's tiny plants and looked forward to our video calls. We loved to compare notes as nana began to grow the exact same plants as us. He even began experimenting with different surfaces and containers. Since the process is so simple and requires no special techniques, most of his experiments were successful. Not only was it gratifying for me to help him with the process of growing the microgreens, but it was also exciting to connect with him while being miles apart.

What I discovered about myself through this interaction is that as much as I like gardening, I also like sharing my observations and learnings with others. Judging from the joy this new hobby brought to my grandfather, I want to share the joy of growing microgreens with others. Growing microgreens also dispelled the myth of “having a green thumb”. We figured how easy, mess-free, hassle-free and fast this process is. In the world of instant gratification, growing microgreens comes closest to providing this satisfaction by showing growth in its form every single day.
